Hmm. My standard configuration is Auto ISO constrained to within 100-400, Program with MTF line or Av mode. When in Program, I find the camera does a remarkably good job most of the time, and when I need a different zone of focus I use the Program Shift feature, then return to the line with the Green button. But most of the time I want to be in explicit control of focus zone so I'm in Av mode.
I've not had any issues with the MTF program line... seems to do the right thing most of the time.
