I put all three beside each other on the screen, the seismograph on the left, pillar in the middle, the one with the light on the right. I can't recognise the other objects in that shot, but the central theme of the other two seems to be earthquakes?
The first thing that struck me was the roughness of the walls in the flank shots compared to the smoothness of the pillar and ceiling. Next thing I thought was that the pillar image has a composition that stands on its own much better than do the flanks. After looking at it for a whike, I think there is an imbalance in the triptych because both the flanks have compositions with points of gravity to the left of their frames. The way the shadows fall contributes to this end too. The flanks have light sources on the right hand side, while the pillars are illuminated from the left. I can't decide if I like this imbalance or not. On one hand, the skew conveys a lability which, to me, adds to a message about what building in quake zones must be like. On the other hand, the pillar shot conveys strength and stability in such a way that I keep thinking the objects other shots should have been huddled up against it in a more symmetrical composition, builiding up around the centre image. Maybe this tension is a strength of the trio in itself... If the triptych is not about earthquakes, just ignore this post. :-) Cheers, Jostein 2007/5/27, Godfrey DiGiorgi <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > I went to the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, yesterday to > see the exhibit that I had seen a documentary movie of last week.
