Brendan, I had very similar experience to what you describe just in 
regard to flare. I would aim my camera and see a flare in the 
viewfinder. I then would stop down the lens by DOF preview button and 
still see it. Then I would take a shot and voila - no flare. Finally I 
realized that if I looked in the VF without my glasses - no flare would 
be seen.

I shall keep your observation in mind next time I process my 80-320 
shots ;-).
