I looked into the flat earth business, when I was searching for myths the other
day. Seems that most educated people knew the earth was a sphere far before the
fifteenth century. Washington Irving is responsible for the misinformation.
When he dramatized Columbus' voyage and "discovery," he decided that the
flat-earth story would make it all more dramatic in that the crew would think
they were going to sail off the edge of the world. It was a fairy tale.
