Makes me lean more toward XP being hosed in some way. It's got something in the startup files that's corrupted. I bet the video driver is starting up in some mode not supported by the display. Every thing you describe showing on screen is plain vanilla VGA before it switches to whatever mode the video driver is set to. But, if it is the CMOS battery, you'll only have to reset it once after you replace it, and it should automatically come up into a setup screen telling you your configuration has changed.
