On 11/5/07, Bob Shell, discombobulated, unleashed:

If it's not burning the oil, it's still leaving the crankcase somehow,
right? A little CSI here. Where might it go? If it is leaking from the
crankcase, might it leak somewhere not immediately obvious? I once had
an old Range Rover that leaked from the transfer gearbox into the main
gearbox - net result = overfilled main box and zilch in the transfer
case and lo and behold the transfer case imploded after it got rather
hot in there. The point is, no oil on the driveway, so no suspicions.
Same vehicle also pumped out engine through the rear main bearing seal
into the bellhousing. It emptied slowly but surely through the
bellhousing drain hole, but only usually on heavy breaking on a run.
Only spits and spots on the drive. The engine needed much more oil than
seemed to be pouring out of it.

Classic signs of leakage while driving: a shitty mess on the rear that
don;t mix with water too well ;-)

HTH and good luck.
