TOKYO, May 11 Kyodo

Pentax Corp. said Friday it will focus on the enhancement of
overseas production facilities and sales channels to raise its
corporate value under a new business plan.

Pentax said it will scale down money-losing operations, such as
production of surveying devices, and instead concentrate on its three
core businesses -- digital cameras, optical components and medical
products.

Pentax President Takashi Watanuki, speaking at a news conference
in Tokyo, said the company will try to become more profit-oriented,
rather than seeking to expand the volume of its products.

Pentax will improve its U.S. sales channels from this summer and try
to expand its digital camera business in emerging economies, including China
and Russia and Eastern European countries.

...

In addition to measures under the plan, Pentax may consider
selling the land and buildings of its head office in Tokyo in a bid
to improve its finances, according to sources.

...

''We are confident of pursuing an independent management,''
Shinichiro Mitsuhashi, Pentax senior vice president in charge of
financial matters, told reporters following the release of the upbeat
earnings. ''I find no reason to be under the wing of a huge capital.''
