Frank makes an interesting point. I reckon it's the teleconverter.
Christian, do a test specifically looking at bokeh, one just using your
long lens, another using the long lens plus TC. Compare. I bet you'll
find the bokeh is harsh on the latter.

My 70-200 2.8  L IS seems fine by itself, but when I add the 2X, it goes
to pot.
