Godfrey - Idid this one with praactiacally no photoshopping (except for masking out the crop I wanted). I used grease on the lens filter (edges), which is especielly evident/visible in the lower right hand side. http://www.flickr.com/photos/bladt/484727285/ Regards Jens Bladt

I had over done the thing. I have later made photographs, with less grese and further away from the centre. This worked mcu better - it's hardly noticable - but still quite powerful. I may publish this later on. A good soft-focus filter, the vaseline technique, a "soft focus" specialized lens ... they're all attempting to achieve a cloud of soft focus blooming around the subject while also allowing a great deal of the detail to be preserved. Opening up the lens alone can't do that. The best things I ever found at this effect were the old Zeiss Softar filters. Of course, like any other effect, over-use of soft-focus can make it seem cliche and diminish its value.
