Well.... http://www.robertstech.com/panorama.htm Short version: With dedicated stitching software, even inexpensive stuff, you can often do good panoramas from handheld shots. If you're shooting JPEGs, manual white balance and manual exposure are critical. (For Raw shooters, white balance isn't important but manual exposure is still a good idea though not essential) A tripod is a very good idea if at all possible. Dedicated pano heads are valuable, especially if you have prominent foreground subjects.
