Peter, We were in New Zealand & Australia in Oct/Nov '06. We flew into Auckland and then on to Queenstown on the South Island for 8 or 10 days. On the way back from Australia, we spent 4-5 days on the North Island. It's a wonderful place.
Here's a map of where we drove on the South Island. http://picasaweb.google.com/rf.sullivan/NewZealand02/photo#4992791946674176018 http://tinyurl.com/3y96k5 Queenstown is great scenery, dark starry skys, and probably skying this time of year. Don't miss an all day bus+boat trip to Doubtful Sound, the most southwestern part of our trip (see map). Spectacular scenery. The west side of the island is rather sparsely populated, but the vistas are grand around the top of the island (Nelson) and along the coast down to (up from) Christchurch. Here are my photos with some captions. http://picasaweb.google.com/rf.sullivan/Sabbatical http://picasaweb.google.com/rf.sullivan/NewZealand02 On our return to the North Island, we went north from Auckland and skipped Rotorua altogether (warned it was a tourist trap). After a 3-4 hour drive north, we were in a tropical climate at Bay of Islands, Paihia and then Hokianga Bay. Again, we were very impressed with the beautiful scenery. (see photos) http://picasaweb.google.com/rf.sullivan/NorthIslandNewZealand We rented cars from Budget without any problems. There were just 2 of us, so an intermediate car was just fine. The roads are two lanes but tarmac, so an SUV is a bit of overkill especially in the mountains. We thought of driving from the North Island to the South Island, but the fast ferrytook 3 hours to cross the Nelson(?) straights and actually took 7-8 hours on the day we went south as there were 10 meter swells. We can't wait to go back. Regards, Bob S.
