M and K lenses don't have A settings. I use green button manual mode  
most often with my Vivitar Series 1 90/2.5 macro, which is  
mechanically the same as a K lens. I also use it with the K-series  
85/1.8 and K 28/3.5 fairly often. I may be adjusting the shutter  
speed after looking at the histogram and display. When I'm shooting,  
I'm not always conscious of such things. It's all sort of rote. I  
know I shoot nearly wide open with the 85 and the 28 most of the  
time, but I generally shoot at f11 with the macro. Anyway, I'll give  
them a try again and see what's up.
