Vaseline, Crisco,  olive oil, butter, nose grease, motor oil..........

Any kind of grease  will do.

As Frankie Valli sang:

It  looks like fake shallow DOF. Opening up the f-stop would seem to be a lot 
easier  and a lot less messy. I guess I just don't get it.
