While of course bokeh is not easily measured and is surely subjective to a large extent, I think its pretty well established that smooth out of focus highlights constitutes better bokeh than unusal double image or harsh jagged bokeh that this M85 lens produces when used near minimum focus distance and wide apertures. Its just plain "odd" compared to what you normally see with most lenses in the areas of the image that are very far out of focus. jco

[was: Re: M85mm f2.0 bokeh] Well, what's pleasing bokeh and what's not is subject to the to the eye of the beholder, just like beauty. That said, the rendering of out of focus (OOF as I call it) areas of an image are affected by the shape of the aperture (or iris) and the distribution of light in the OOF cone. When OOF, each point of light is rendered as an image made up of areas shaped the same as the iris. This is not usually discerned in photos without point sources of light, but can be readily seen in if looking at an OOF star or distant street lamp. The effects of light distribution in the OOF cone, whether concentrated at the edge or the center of the OOF film plane can have marked effects in lines in the OOF area of the photo. If the light is concentrated more at the edge of the OOF area of the cone, you get a smoother rendition of the OOF areas in photos taken with mirror lenses, that is, edges will appear to double. If the light is concentrated more toward the center of the OOF area of the cone, then the OOF areas are milky smooth. I prefer the SMC Pentax (K) 85/1.8 as the bokeh appears smooth to me, and it doesn't scare small children like it's heaver, somewhat faster, and (IMO) smoother bookeh(ed) SMC PENTAX-A* 85:1.4. ----- Original Message ----- From: "J.
