Obviously, ugly is as ugly does.  Bokeh varies with aperture and with the 
distance of items in the frame from the focal point, as you know.

How can one say, definitively, absolutely that a lens has bad bokeh? My 
500/8 mirror lens exhibits un-aesthetic bokeh at times, but not too bad 
depending how items in the FOV are placed outside the DOF.

'Millions of shots' don't prove anything?  That's like saying if I take one 
picture of my wife when she's sick and has the flu, that she's ugly, whereas 
in plenty of pictures she's a stunner when she's feeling great.
