I disinstalled the printer driver which had worked flawlessly for ages and reinstalled a "virgin" one from the original CD suppied by HP... et voila (typical Italian word ;-) everything was back to work. So, you can find a virgin (software) in Italy, after all. Prior to do that, I struggled with XP Services, antivirus and the like for a couple hours. Too easy to think the driver could be the cure, especially since apparently I had the problem with all installed printers (also an Epson and an Adobe pdf converter), while the print spooler was just killed by the dead HP driver.
