You're not :-) I've dropped a camera with a (think it was 300mm/f4.5) lens and had the filter shatter. The lens was ok. I've also dropped the 20d with 70-200/f2.8. No filter, no damage to lens apart from crack on the lens hood and a dent on the edge of the lens cap. lens hood was reversed at the time.
