You set the camera to manual, set the lens to the aperture you want, and the camera will briefly stop the lens down for a meter reading, and then set the shutter speed accordingly when you depress the green button. To get this function, you need to set the camera to allow shutter operation with the lens set off A. I'm not sure of the exact wording in the camera setup menu. You can see if it will work for the way you shoot by taking your A series lens off the A setting and use it like a non A lens, using the green button metering/auto shutter speed setting method for taking pictures. It works well, providing you don't run out of metering range. Since the lens is stopped down for metering, you can get wrong readings if the light gets dim enough.
