I haven't read the rest of this thread yet, but I thought I'd toss in my two cents anyway.
I swear by the Nikon Coolscan 8000. It was what I used for all my 35mm, medium format, small format & odd-sized scanning at my old camera shop job. When the shop closed, I bought the scanner from them. The Minolta 5400 was a very good scanner for its price point, but the Nikon 8000 was probably the best dedicated film scanner I've used.
