Spotmatics have a fairly unique metering circuit that can take 1.55v or 
1.35v batteries, as voltage only changes needle deflection not the 
centre position (unlike most other cameras of that era, where the 
'correct' exposure position will shift due to voltage).

The meter is likely either dead or in need of adjustment if it's not 
reading correctly.
