FRINGING is not causeed by CA, so getting
an APO lens to eliminate CA is not going
to help the FRINGING problem.

I think that's the answer, Rob. I have seen some tests
with the K10D and the 645 version of the 400mm f5.6 IF
ED lens and it suffers from purple fringing, too. I
suppose most long lenses wide open shooting birds in
trees against the sky are going to show this weekness.
ED glass alone obviously doesn't seem to fix this
problem, at least on digital bodies. I've heard some
claim that APO will help in this regard. Supposedly
the Sigma 400 APO solves this problem but I haven't
seen anything definitive.
