Well, with a bit of further research and little gentle working with a
jewelers screwdriver I have the answer. It would appear everyone is right...

Pentax did indeed remove the user changable screen on the DL, no idea
why, I read the manual for the DL and DS, they appear to be near
identical in function. The differences appear to be the DL lacks the
user replaceable focusing screens but has a bigger LCD.

Given that, the DL's screen is in fact replaceable, but it is just not
so convenient, it has a rather awkward clip affair that has to be
wiggled with a screwdriver to get it to release. Not something I would
recommend for the clumsy as a single slip will ruin your screen.

So I now have a focusing screen with diagonal triple wedge microprism
and ground glass ring, cut down from an old Praktica BC1.

If anyone is interested the screen size is 26.3 x 17.9, just make sure
you get the split image bit in the middle!!

As JCO says.. makes a huge difference, it feels like a proper camera now.

Oh yes, an SD card case makes a good makeshift case for your old screen.

Cheers
Andy.
