what about those who get addicted to *legal* drugs?
i mean, vodka is illegal in kuwait, marijuina in usa, either is legal
in netherlands,
and so on...
i am not sure "legal" or "illegal" is meaningful when it applies to
a single person consumption.

that aside, people use substances for a number of reasons, many of
those are quite
legitimate, considering the alternatives (like, getting drunk vs
jumping off the bridge).
making blanket statements is not a very smart thing to do.

besides, are you so sure about "negative light by society at large"? --
i am not sure, eg, pot is viewed very negatively by society (not
government) here.
