You can use gearbox bikes on gnarly terrain; they just need to be built for it :) http://www.laharbikes.com/ If you'll excuse the shockingly bad website, that's a full carbon- fibre downhill racing bike with a 14-speed planetary-geared hub mounted in the frame. Don't think it's fragile because it's made of carbon: the manufacturer warranties them for 5 pro race seasons. Apparently it's getting quite a reputation...
