Alsa, it's true. We almost looked into getting one when we lived in Rochester but a veterinarian friend of ours warned that they're prone to all kinds of "weird-ass sarcomas". And within a year, our friend's BMD had died of cancer. And it was a weird scarcoma. (Both my S.O. and the friend who owned the dog are pathologists so they looked into it in some detail.) The friend with the dog had previously lived in NYC and was a member of a Bernese Mountain Dog club there. They used to have big group-dog-walks in central park that always attracted a lot of attention! My family's best-ever dog was a Great Dane/Mastiff cross.
