If you're ever going to be running with the external drive disconnected, you don't want to do RAID1. What you want to do is to run a utility to sync the contents of the internal drive, to the external drive. I do this with my iBook here, to one partition on a 250GB external firewire drive. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to do the copying, though there are faster utilities (like SuperDuper) if you're willing to pay for them.
