Thanks to all who replied.

No - the Af500FTZ does not have an auto function (the old-fashioned 
sensor in flash auto function.)

I have the AF 360FGT but it's been my main macro fash and has endured a 
good degree of knocking around, and does not have a tilt and swivel head 
(only a tilt head.) An upgrade may be in order..
