Markus, let me try to give you my answer to this question.

There is common sense in buying latest equipment from the manufacturer.
You do so in hope that your lenses will be designed taking into account
your cameras. Before introduction of DFA and DA primes, especially DA
Limited lenses Pentax was introducing mostly zoom lenses.

In fact, it seems to me most manufactures, perhaps except Pentax,
produce significantly more new zoom lenses than prime ones.

Before I had Tamron 28-75/2.8 zoom lens I used primes, notably FA
Limited lenses. Now for everyday walk around I use this zoom lens as it
gives totally satisfactory, very solid and rather excellent results.

Here is an example:

Shot at wide open at ISO 800 with my *istD. I had to perform Smart
Sharpen (my favorite sharpening filter) on the picture after I resized.
Otherwise, I should say I quite like the picture from technical standpoint.

Each horse has its course so to say. I am not selling my FA Limiteds. I
am using them, but for less casual shooting.

Hope it gives you a different angle (also focal length ;-) ) to consider
the problem from.

Boris
