In a pinch, without a panoramic head, it makes it easier to take 
reasonable successive pictures to compose a panorama.  Otherwise it 
makes it harder to stitch.  Of course, the ideal is to have a panoramic 
head that allows you to put the pivot point above the lens nodal point.
