Back in my studio days, a floater was a photographer without a  
permanent studio. If a regular photographer had vacation or needed  
some time off otherwise, the floater would roll into town and shoot  
that schedule. It's how I started in that division, having moved over  
from school photos, where we were all floaters. Good times.
