They are. The Joshua Tree National Park is not that far from where I was 
then. But at that point I was actually nearer the Mohave Desert. Not right on 
it 
officially, but it was off that direction. Which is why I said the edge of the 
Mohave Desert.

Driving out of California to the SW I did see great cacti, the ones with the 
arms, like in cartoons, but I felt I didn't have time, so I didn't stop and 
take pictures. Wish I had. Anyway, now I know where to go to shoot them if I 
want.
