Makus - I seldom use the istD without the vertical grip. It seems to me that the camera is balanced better with the grip attached. I agree with Paul, it really makes shooting verticals much more comfortable and easier for me to hold it stable.
Since a set of Lithium ion batteries lasts for about 1000 shots, I only put batteries in the grip. It's easier to change the grip batteries than to remove the grip to change batteries in the body. >From time to time, I'll attach either the 21 or 40 to the D, remove the grip and put the batteries in the body. Short of using a point & shoot, it makes a pretty small camera.
