I've been reading (spent a few HOURS at this a couple nights ago)
through a website called "strobist"

And it has me quite interested in learning how to work with my flash
OFF-camera.

As I have a DS, there is no internal wireless trigger. And, quite
frankly, I like the idea (as shown quite frequently on this site) of
not even having a flash on-camera at all - just a remote trigger. So
the idea of purchasing a second EF-500 DG Super just for triggering
purposes doesn't appeal.

However - the units he recommends are a bit pricey for a pair ($400!)
of transceivers. As I'm not sure how I'll progress with this kind of
work, I'd like to start out "cheap" and work my way up to the proper
gear if it appeals.

Does anyone have a recommendation for an inexpensive way to trigger a
flash wirelessly? Doesn't have to be TTL or P-TTL or anything - just
a plain "standard" hotshoe-mounted device on the camera and a plain
old remote hotshoe-connected device on the flash. Would be cool to
find something sub-$100 - does such a thing exist?
