Kuribayashi was the name of the company that made Petri cameras. The
company was founded in 1907 to make photo accessories and went into
camera production in 1919. Their original cameras were sold under
the brand name First. They changed to the Petri name after WW II and
later changed the company name to Petri Camera Company. They made a
range of SLR cameras of mediocre quality until their bankruptcy in
1977. John Baird wrote a book on Petri cameras that I have a copy of
somewhere. Those SLRs are completely unique in mechanical design,
sort of a brute force design with built-in self-destruct tendencies.
There used to be a Petri collectors society that put out a regular
newsletter, but I haven't heard about it or Don Phillips, the
founder, for a very long time.
