I get you point. I just got an Ensign Rosstar (645) vintage English folding
vamera- byaccident, actually. I did bid a very small amount.
I recently got two Perkeo I's the same way.
Sometimes I think - if I get it very cheap it's OK. If I don't,  that's fine
too.
Serious "sniping" I have only done a few times. Once for the SMC Pentax-A
3.5 35-105mm (not ebay).
I bid like 100 USD above the high bidder in the last seconds. That did pay
off. Got it for 110 USD. I was told by the PDML, that it's a great lens.
It certailny is, although the focus distance is really not short enough for
macro:-)

That's why I never mention the technique to anyone else...
I don't particularly like the term "sniping" because of the connotation
baggage it carries.
I choose to call it an intelligent bidding technique.
As with you, if I decide I really want an item, I rarely lose it.
