As far back as the mid 1970s, Nikon could probably have done a 
programmed AE camera with the technology they had available.
The F2s with the AE adaptor would do shutter priority in around 1975, 
and the EL had aperture priority auto in 1972.
Nikon cameras have always had aperture availability info to transmit to 
the meter. That was what the rabbit ears did when you mounted the lens 
and twisted the aperture to wide open than fully closed.
