DUH. It's a known issue. In reasonable light and moderate F stops, it isn't an issue, and you are measuring the light at the shooting aperture, rather than depending on the vagaries of a mechanical linkage. When the meter falls out of range, you have to either compensate with technique, or use a lens that supports open aperture metering. No one said the world was perfect.
