No, middle gray (or the 18% reflectance standard used for meter calibration) is Zone V. Zone system basic: The scale runs from Zone I to X, with Zone I being black, Zone X being white. The brightest area to retain detail should be in Zone IX, and the Zones represent one-stop steps, approximately.
