Pentax had to move production of that camera from Japan to China to allow it to be made cheaply enough, and they made a whole bunch of changes to the camera to cut cost corners. More plastic, less metal, esentially slave labour. When they couldn't continue to make is at a price that would sell, even with a cheap labour pool, they dropped production. The world has changed now, the Chinese aren't as interested in being peasant factory slaves nowadays, and well off populations need to understand that.
