It's an interaction between the original (analog) image, the
digitization process for the image, and the display of the image.  I've
never noticed it on my *ist D, either, but (a) I haven't gone looking
for it, and (b) the types of photos I do typically wouldn't show it
because they don't have "big" areas of one color with a pattern in it,
where it would be a lot more noticeable.
