I have to say I basically agree with JCO on this one with respect to the 
minimal cost of inclusion and with Pentax's reasoning for not including it.  
Pentax probably lost more money designing and implementing the stupid power 
zoom feature on their '90-era cameras and lenses.  Pentax would simply have 
customers buy new lenses thancontinue using their old (or the large supply 
of used) ones.  I think the decision was made purely in Pentax's monetary 
self-interest and to stimulate sales of new lenses.

That being said, I think it's obvious the vast majority of new camera buyers 
*will* be in the market for newer lenses that don't require the feature.  
Even myself.  The green button kludge at least lets me use the older lenses 
and that works for me.
