It's probably DDR400 RAM. The processor is 400 MHZ FSB. If you don't have DDR400 memory, you'll see a performance increase just by upgrading that. > Without switching motherboards, I can move up to around P4 3.0 with an > 800Mhz FSB and hyper-threading for about $85. Honestly, unless you move up to a motherboard that either has dual-channel RAM access, or uses DDR2 RAM (not backwards compatible with your DDR RAM), you probably won't see much of a performance difference. The real bottleneck is between the memory and the processor. > How would one describe the improvement is speed here? 1-10 with ten being > "waoh, that's the best $85 I ever spent!" Probably about a 2 or a 3 on that scale. Honestly, your money is probably better spent in getting more memory. Photoshop is MUCH happier on my machine with a gig of RAM available than it was with only 512 megabytes. If I were in your position, I'd probably spend $50-60 to throw another 512 megabytes of RAM at the machine, and start saving up for one of the Intel-based macs. The Core 2 Duo would be a significant improvement over what you have now. -Mat -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
