You are correct but the problem is that the lenses are still optimised
for 36x24mm or were until they were nobbled. The register distance is
a function of the required mirror clearance which is determined my
reflex mirror size/film format. So given the register distance lenses
providing a "normal" angle of view need to be retro-focus designs
instead of gaussian making them much larger for comparable
performance.
