I have 77 in silver variety. Indeed it focuses ever so slower than,
say 43 Ltd or 31 Ltd. But I think it is natural. The longer focal
lengths usually have longer throw of the focusing ring... I mean that
radial distance that has to be passed in order to rotate the lens from
infinity to its closest range.

I generally noticed that my *istD is more often "unsure" of its
focusing position with 77 than with other limited lenses. It would get
to focus and then shift slightly few times until settling down and
proudly displaying that in-focus sign. This really does not concern
me. For all I care, I would even switch to manual focus and work based
on confirmation lights...

If you want, we can exchange your black one for my silver one ;-)...
