You have Obsolete and Unusable mixed up. Good lenses can quite easily 
become obsolete, whether due to improved optical formulas, better 
coatings or simple things like faster AF drives in the lens, IS or 
distance communication for exposure.

That doesn't render them unusable. Nothing wrong with obsolete gear.
