There is a difference between 'approve' and 'approve of'. 

'Approve of' is perfectly ok the way I used it. Obviously it doesn't
matter one way or the other, but I also don't approve of killing
civilians. 'Approve of' doesn't imply anything about whether or not
one's approval matters.

However, in this instance it does make a difference, since my
disapproval means I won't use these abbreviations.
