I don't think the reason for the decline in most song bird populations 
is unknown.  I'm pretty sure it is mostly due to habitat loss, 
especially in their "wintering" grounds in Central and South America. 
Combine that with loss of suitable nesting habitat in North America and 
you can have serious decline in populations.
