Probably trying to recover on the card itself, no room for that. There 
is a pretty good free recovery program that has been recommended here 
several times, but I can not find my link to the site. Maybe someone 
else can remember better than me.

You probably are getting that 996 megabyte message because there is 
something wrong (you think?). There is not that much space for files, 
after system overhead, on the card.

Remember the one about the guy who took 36 irretrievable shots on 35mm, 
carefully rewound the film, removed the cassette, pulled the film from 
the cassette and looked at it carefully, and said, "Darn, the photos 
didn't come out". You do not have to be quite that stupid to screw up 
with digital.

I hope you manage to recover that shots. I am sorry I can be so little 
help in the matter.
