Hi Bruce.

The clinic I attended was a band competition.  The two best Stage Bands got 
to play a couple of songs in concert with Maynard's band that evening.  
Our's was one of them.  I also saw him in Denver in 1986.

Cool that your son is playing trumpet,  Bet your house is noisy! That's what 
I play, now just for my own personal pleasure and to make the Border Collie 
sing.

You may know of these... I only found it a couple of years ago.  Yamaha 
makes an electronic mute with headphones.  When playing, there's little 
backpressure compared to a regular mute, and the sound through the 
headphones sounds like no mute is being used.  Nice for late night 
practicing.
