A lens without an aperture ring is less likely to break no matter what you choose to do with it: it has fewer parts to break. If you shoot in aperture priority much of the time with any of the DSLR bodies, an A setting and an aperture ring do exactly the same thing: you set the aperture with the body. The only situation where an aperture ring is essential is if you're using an old set of extension tubes that do not transmit the lens information. In that specific instance, you must have the aperture ring to set anything other than a fully stopped down lens opening. Most of my A, F and FA series lenses have never been taken off the A setting since I bought them, and I shoot almost 95% of the time with the camera in Aperture Priority exposure mode. The biggest exception to this is the A50/2.8 Macro which I use on the Pentax Automatic extension tubes a good bit of the time.
